"Prominent Operating Systems in South Africa"

According to data from Statcounter GlobalStats, Android and Windows have consistently maintained their position as the leading operating systems (OS) in South Africa for a considerable period of time. These two platforms enjoy widespread popularity among users in the country.

As of May 2023, Google's mobile operating system commanded a significant share of the South African market, amounting to 67.56%. On the other hand, Microsoft's Windows emerged as the leading desktop operating system, holding a dominant market share of 62.06%.

Nevertheless, their once indisputable supremacy has waned. In May 2019, Android enjoyed an unrivaled market share peak of 75.34%, while Windows held an overwhelming 78.91% dominance in the desktop operating system market within South Africa. However, both operating systems have since experienced substantial declines from their towering positions.

When examining the mobile sector, Apple's iOS has gained a significant share of the market. Similarly, in the realm of desktop operating systems, Apple's MacOS has experienced a rise in market share, increasing from 13.89% in May 2019 to 18.96%. However, it is worth noting that the number of PCs reporting an "Unknown OS" to StatCounter has significantly increased. As a result, Microsoft's traditional dominance in the desktop space seems to be weakening, particularly in South Africa

During the same period, ChromeOS experienced a significant growth in market share, increasing from 1.35% to 3.59%.

The dominance of Android in South Africa comes as no surprise, given the presence of renowned brands such as Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Tecno. These manufacturers specialize in producing affordable and mid-range Android smartphones, which enjoy immense popularity, particularly in developing countries like South Africa.

This phenomenon could also account for the upward trend in ChromeOS's market share. Google has introduced a variant of ChromeOS called ChromeOS Flex, specifically designed to operate on less powerful or potentially outdated computers. This offering by Google enables users to leverage the benefits of ChromeOS even with limited hardware capabilities.

Statcounter GlobalStats' data does not distinguish between the two Chrome operating systems. This data analytics firm examines approximately 1.5 million websites, encompassing over 5 billion monthly page views, to identify the top brands and vendors across different industries and regions.

Table: Desktop OS Market Share in South Africa (2019-2023)

Operating System May 2019 May 2023

Windows 79.45% 62.60% MacOS 14.25% 17.65% Unknown OS 4.30% 12.69% Linux 1.55% 2.70% ChromeOS 0.45% 1.20%

Over the past five years, the market share of Microsoft's Windows in South Africa has experienced a decline of 16.85%. This decline has allowed Apple's MacOS to capture a larger portion of the market. However, this shift has also been accompanied by a significant increase in the category of "Unknown OS."

The "Unknown OS" category has grown from 4.30% in May 2019 to 12.69% in May 2023. While it is possible that a portion of this increase is due to Windows PCs not being accurately accounted for, it still indicates a potential weakening of Microsoft's dominance.

In terms of other operating systems, Linux has seen a steady increase in market share over the five-year period, rising from 1.55% to 2.70%. Similarly, the market share of ChromeOS has nearly tripled, going from 0.45% to 1.20%.

This summarizes the desktop OS market share in South Africa from 2019 to 2023.

Over the past five years, the mobile operating system market share in South Africa has witnessed notable shifts. Android, which held a dominant position, experienced a decline of nearly 10%, dropping from 75.34% in May 2019 to 67.56% in May 2023. In contrast, iOS, the second-most popular operating system, made significant gains, rising from 22.66% to 31.60% during the same period.

Securing a comfortable lead in third place is an unnamed "Samsung" mobile operating system, holding a 0.45% market share as of May 2023. KaiOS, a mobile Linux distribution tailored for feature phones, encountered a decline in its market share from 0.77% in May 2019 to 0.20% in May 2023.

Nokia and Windows, despite having minimal market shares, maintained relative consistency since May 2020. However, they experienced significant drops between May 2019 and May 2020. An "Other" category, included by Statcounter GlobalStats, exhibited fluctuating market shares over the years, currently accounting for 0.16%.
